The son of a craftsman, Guccio Gucci who was born in 1881, established in Florence Italy, as a saddlers shop, in 1906, the House of Gucci. Guccio's greatest talent was working with leather goods. In the 1920s, Guccio began to sell leather bags to horsemen. From this he progressed to elite luggage with the advancement of his clientele from reading horses to driving automobiles. In the year 1938, Guccio Gucci launched his initial shop for retail trade. It was located on the Via Condotti, which is in Rome.
The creation of the widely recognized Gucci trademark which is in the shape of a leather bag sporting a bamboo handle, occurred in 1947. It is during the 1950’s that the company introduced the trademark with the red striped webbing. This was derived from its original former location on a saddle girth. Much as the leather moccasin with the leather bit, this became an insignia.
Many of Guccio Gucci greatest classics were created as early as the 1950’s. This included such items as shoes, luggage, ties, and the celebrated handbags including the bamboo handle. Although he died in 1953, following his death, the Gucci family was successful in achieving new heights for the company. They did this by setting up stores in Palm Beach, London, Paris, Tokyo, and Beverly Hills. During the 1960’s the family achieved increasing fame for the Gucci Empire. It was at this time that various Hollywood stars including Peter Sellers, Grace Kelly, and Audrey Hepburn made the name Gucci identical with “chic”. A further lift was given to the company’s reputation when Jackie Kennedy was photographed carrying a Gucci shoulder bag. This bag later became known as the “Jackie O”. It was at this time that the company adopted the “GG” logo.
There was however, along with the increasing fame and brand name recognition, some problems. At the same time that goods associated with Gucci goods were considered a status symbol for the times, there were disagreements between management and the inner family. By to he time Maurizio Gucci received the business from the founding brother, it was clearly ailing. In the 1980’s, he then sold it to an Arab interest.
By the 1990’s the company’s newest executive manager, Tom Ford, Gucci’s most recent executive head, returned the company back to its place as being within the center of chic. The company now offers a diverse line of products, which include shoes (including the moccasin with the well known Gucci snaffle-bit), leather fashions, colognes, perfumes, cosmetics, the "Flora" foulard which was actually created by Rodolfo Gucci for Grace Kelly, jewelry, suitcases, watches, sports articles, silk scarves, belt clasps containing the Guccio Gucci initials, which had been introduced in 1964), eyeglasses and ties.
