The Bvlgaris are descendents of an ancient Greek family of silversmiths. In the mid-19th century Sotirio Bvlgari emigrated to Italy where he opened his first shop in the Via Sistina in Rome in 1884. In 1905, with the help of his sons Costantino and Giorgio, he launched a shop in the Via Condotti, which is still the Bvlgari flagship store.

The two brothers developed a passionate interest in precious stones and jewels while gradually taking over their father's role. During the 50's the Bvlgaris moved away from the strict disciplines of the dominant French school to create their own unique fashion styles.

The opening of their overseas stores in New York, Paris, Geneva, and Monte Carlo marked the beginning of Bvlgari's international expansion and in July 1995 the Bvlgari Holding Company was first quoted on the Italian Stock Exchange and the International SEAQ in London. In the early 1990's, Bvlgari Parfums was established in Switzerland launching the Group into the high-class perfume market.

Bvlgari introduced its first collection of silk scarves in 1997. The first collection of leather bags and eyewear were launched in 1998, while table and giftware were added in 1999 to complete Bvlgari's expansion program.

Today, Chairman and Vice-Chairman, Paolo Bulgari and Nicola Bulgari, together with the Chief Executive Officer, nephew Francesco Trapani, manage the company’s development with the intent of better serving an international market, while remaining fine and prestigious jewelers.
