Giorgio Armani, who is without debate among the most recognized of Italian designers, was born in 1934 in Piacenza, Italy. His entrance into fashion during the 60s was almost by chance. This followed attempts at studying medicine at Milan University, and at being a photographer.

After serving in the Italian army, Armani began his career serving as a window dresser for a noted department store in Milan, La Rinascente. It was the many trips that he took to Britain at this time that allowed him to develop his distinct style. He called England a center for inspiration, he describes how his work was enhanced at the time that he was working at La Rinascente by the trips to London and by the influences on him of what he saw in the shops there. At that time he brought with him from England some yellow cardigans, which he found in a small boutique. People thought he was nuts since such things were usually worn by royalty and not the average man. It was very, very English and elitist.

By the year 1964, having gained a significant understanding of design and fabric, Nino Cerruti's men's clothing company took him on as a designer. He was to later become a designer for Hitman. This was followed by jobs at Ungaro and Zegna. By the year 1974, Armani succeeded in presenting his own label for menswear. A year later he presented his first womenswear collection.

Several other lines have been developed since that time including Giorgio Armani Junior, Swimwear, Underwear, Occhiali and Accessories. He was able to capitalize in 1981, on his group of more exclusive labels by presenting to the public a new chain of stores that were dedicated to selling his less expensive lines, Armani Jeans and Emporio Armani. By the year 2000, Armani was able to include a new range of make-ups, that were specially designed for him by Pat McGrath. At the present time, the empire set up by Armani includes approximately 2,000 emporia throughout the world, with yearly sales in access of $1 billion. His show in New York in March of 1998 drew an illustrious crowd when Paris police shut down his Place Saint Sulpice black marquee, saying that it was unsafe. This drew such luminaries as Sophia Loren, Mark Wahlberg, Robert de Niro, Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, and Wyclef Jean of The Fugees.

In spite of the fact that such celebrities are often present at his showings, Armani has claimed that he bases his vision on the common man. He has stated repeatedly that clothes should be created to be worn and not only seen, drawing on the skills he gained when he was a menswear designer to create modern clothes for women. While the wide-shouldered power suit was the trademark of the Eighties it has been adjusted becoming a more flexible, sensible shape and today’s Armani collections are stylish and more low key (Armani himself has many times stated his dislike for what he calls "important" clothes).
